The NeXTraIn.PortS Project: an overview
Launched in October 2023, the NeXTraIn.PortS project is set to conclude by 2026. It is part of the KA220-VET Cooperation Partnership in Vocational Education and Training, which seeks to strengthen international partnerships and implement innovative training models. The partnership comprises prestigious entities and institutions, including the North Tyrrhenian Sea Port System Authority (AdSP-MTS) as the lead, Fundación Valenciaport, the STC-GROUP of the Port of Rotterdam, the Intermodal Logistics Training Center (CFLI) of Venice, the University of Piraeus, START 4.0 Competence Center of MISE, and PLIS – Provincia Livorno Sviluppo.
The primary goal is to develop an internationally recognized training system tailored to the needs of port workers through innovative and customized methodologies. The training not only prepares young individuals for entry into the sector but also offers upskilling and reskilling opportunities for current personnel, addressing the challenges of energy transition, digitalization, and safety.
A training network for the future
The AdSP-MTS Vocational Training Center, which has been promoting port sector training initiatives since 1998, plays a pivotal role in the project. Accredited by the Tuscany Region and certified under UNI EN ISO 9001:2015, the center stands out for the quality and innovation of its training proposals. Through NeXTraIn.PortS, it aims to strengthen alliances among educational institutions, universities, businesses, and other stakeholders, contributing to the creation of a strategic training pipeline for the port and logistics sector.
Augmented Reality and smart glasses: the winning combination
At the heart of the project is collaboration with Brochesia. The B Step and B View software, integrated with advanced smart glasses like the RealWear Navigator 500, are key components of the training activities. STC-GROUP, a partner in the project, played a crucial role in recommending this solution based on its positive experiences with these solutions in previous initiatives.
B Step: operational workflows and practical training
B Step software is designed to create detailed and interactive operational workflows. With its intuitive interface and customizable options, it allows port trainers to design guided scenarios for operators during real-world operational procedures. These digital workflows can then be carried out by the operators. Upon completion, B Step generates automatic reports containing all data recorded by the operators, which can be reviewed by trainers. This approach not only enhances training effectiveness but also reduces costs and risks associated with on-the-field training.
B View: Remote Collaboration in Augmented Reality
B View enables immersive remote collaboration. Operators using RealWear Navigator 500 smart glasses can receive real-time support from experts in different locations. This feature is particularly useful for troubleshooting technical issues, conducting diagnostics, or monitoring critical activities.
